What is Illustration
Initial experiments
I played around with the idea of an eight tentacled octopus of illustration, that I could perhaps animate and turn into an interactive online element- every time the creature is clicked, it unravels to form a new definition of illustration.
I then moved on from this idea to explore different styles of illustration, and then I considered creating a narrative of a world in which illustration does not exist. Proceeding to create this sequence within the context of a political cartoon, I began studying the newspaper and satirical cartoons and the style in which they were produced.
However, at the interim crit it was noted that the illustration on the left flowed more freely and was more exciting than the next style of illustration, moreover that the latter felt forced and unnatural. The concept was sound, so for this reason I decided to execute the concept while experimenting with what my illustrative style could become.
Final Outcomes
The final pieces were a series of experiments, pushing the boundaries of what my illustrative style could become. I was quite pleased with the outcomes as I felt the emotions depicted in the cartoon really brought the pictures to life. It was noted that I could have bound the final images into a book as they seemed 'unfinished' however, I really liked the tactility of the large final images, and I felt that presenting them in any other way would diminish the power of the imagery.
It was also noted at the crit that as I so regularly attend life drawing classes, my style from life drawing does not translate into my illustrative style, which is something I've been working to achieve. Below I have shown a few of my life drawings to convey the loose, bold illustrative style that I am trying to achieve, this project being a work in progress of that.
