Punchline: Use type and layout to communicate a joke
Initial experiments
Experimenting with letterpress to communicate the key aspects of the joke through layout, colour and positioning of the type.
Overprinting of the word politician to emphasise the disguise that political figures strive to uphold, rather than admit their true behaviour.
Emphasis of the overprinting to communicate the hidden secrets held by those with a large amount of power.
A typeface that tries to diminish the amount of white space that appears, produced during the first briefing.
Using hand drawn type combined with illustration to convey the joke in a slightly more lighthearted manner.
Taking forward the illustrative route to form a picture with the words. I would have liked to take this idea forward, however it didn't fit in with the style I ended up choosing to pursue.
Slide Projection Experiments
Using letterpress to set type and then scanning these prints and playing around with the letters on Photoshop, I then printed them out on acetate to make slides.
These were then inserted into the slide projector and projected onto a wall. I then distorted the slides by cutting and pasting the letters or painting ink onto them or scratching away at the acetate.
The result were very anarchic looking images that fit the tone of the joke in that they conveyed an atmosphere that was hand made and reminiscent of the punk revolutionary style
It was noted in the crit that some of the arrangement of the type on certain slides didn't read as well as it could, a point which was easily rectified. The video below is what was played via slide projector at the final crit.
I was really pleased with the outcome of this project, I feel like my experimentation with lots of different media really paid off as I was able to create an original piece that really pushed the boundaries of what I have previously been able to achieve within my work.
