Final Prints
Phoebe, Alina and I first brainstormed the idea of time and how we could represent this through the medium of printmaking. After discussing some initial ideas we came to the conclusion that a woman's body is an unusual time-telling device, through the menstrual cycle, puberty and menopause; constant change is a recurring factor. For this reason, we decide to study the uterus, and realised that if we documented the path of an egg throughout the menstrual cycle, this would also reflect the path of the moon. After experimenting with some preliminary image making, we decided to go with the most precise depiction of the uterus to reflect its anatomical detail, and thus use the method of a flipbook to document the time that passed. Unfortunately, after making 28 prints, we realised that the flipbook couldn't be bound as the paper was too thin. Therefore we settled for creating a gif to represent our concept, which ended up flowing surprisingly smoothly.
However, in the final crit whilst viewing everyone else's work, we soon realised that we had missed the point of the project, which was to push printmaking to it's limits and find out what we could achieve with the medium. Although we had some promising initial experiments, instead of pushing these further we decided to pursue the more conceptual approach, which ended up working to our detriment. However, the three of us learned that although it is not easy to work in a team, we had to put our differences to one side in order to produce a decent body of work- although the final outcome was not as expected, we produce some interesting variations of prints which could be taken forward in the future.
